Udas Didi
The name Udaas was given to her by Shri Ma. Her real name was Vilaas (Bilasi) Raina who belonged to a Kashmiri Pandit family.
Udas had a very unhappy life before she met Ma, an always seemed very dour. She was brought into Ma’s personal service by Bhaiji at a very young age.
She offered all the ornaments and other belongings stored by her father for her marriage, at Sri Ma’s feet.
Gurupriya Didi, Udasji and Maroni had adopted the sacred thread, at Ma’s own request, giving them a ritual status that was not ordinarily associated with women in their community.
She performed 108 crore japa at Varanasi Ashram for Sri Ma’s health. She followed Sri Ma like a shadow for many years.
She attended Sri Ma in the last days when as Ma’s condition worsened, she told Udasji, “Increase your jap.” Even in the final phase of her life, Ma was giving spiritual instruction to the woman who had served her.
Some devotees visited Udasji when she was staying in what is now the museum at Kankhal. They asked her about Sri Ma’s last days, and were met with a vigorous denial that Sri Ma had passed away. It was reported that Udasji never visited Sri Ma’s samadhi or even looked at the Samadhi Mandir.
She passed away on 6th September 1995.
